Last month, we welcomed teachers around the world to our first Professional Learning Experience for schools in partnership with CHANGE Arts: Allegiance and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Representation in Musical Theatre.
This invaluable session provided fascinating insights into the making of the Broadway musical Allegiance – based on the true life experience of its star George Takei – and AAPI representation in musical theatre history, plus an exclusive teaching demonstration to help you engage your students in the musical and facilitate important conversations about its surrounding issues.
Our inspiring panel included members of the team behind Allegiance, including director Stafford Arima and actor Greg Watanabe (Mike Masaoka), who spoke about their backgrounds in musical theatre and how they originally became involved in Allegiance, as well as their personal connections to the piece and their views on AAPI representation in musical theatre history. They were joined by artist and educator Suzu Ledoux and CHANGE Arts Education Director Matt Freeman, both of whom have worked on educational resources to support the teaching of Allegiance.
