King Hamlet has been usurped by his brother Claudius, for the throne of Denmark. Claudius has also married Old Hamlet's widow Gertrude.

Already suffering from the grief of his father's death and his mother's rush to remarry his uncle, Hamlet witnesses an apparition of his father who tells him he was murdered by Claudius. Fueled by anger and grief, Hamlet resolves to avenge his father's death.
