“You find yourself having a need to bust out of a stereotype that has been imposed and reclaim your voice”
4x45 is an innovative series of commissioned academic lectures and interviews, captured on film, providing a range of perspectives on a topic, theme or practitioner. Each volume, comprising four chapters, is hosted on Digital Theatre+ and published in print by Routledge.
In this conversation from Volume Three, ‘Performance and Migration’, multidisciplinary performer Sonya Suares and dancer-choreographer Raina Peterson compare stories of growing up as second-generation migrants in Australia, with an introduction by Paul Rae.
Peterson explores how their work draws on influences from Kerala dance style mohiniyattam, Hindu iconography and experimental queer contemporary performance, while Suares discusses her independent music theatre company ‘Watch This’ and championing diversity in live theatre.
