“I want to work with someone who isn’t going to just say yes, is going to have a different idea about something, to come at an idea from a completely different direction – that’s when things become exciting.”
Nicholai explains how the Lyric Hammersmith differs from most theatres, in that working with young people is the engine of its business, its beating heart. He explores the space between what people think is involved in ‘youth arts’ and the reality, and likens his skills in working with young people to those of a sculptor – the ability to visualise the potential finished art piece in the raw materials themselves.
Nicholai envisions that the work being done now is going to transform how audiences interact with theatres and what they expect from performers by putting different voices, different faces and different stories on stage.
