“I lay my story on the ground for someone else to take it up another day, in their own way.”
In the inaugural annnual Directors Guild Peter Brook Lecture, Peter Brook CH CBE gives intimate insight into his life and career, revealing how he came to be a theatre director after intending to work in film. Brook considers the importance of directors coming together in fellowship and explains why an interest in people is a prerequisite of the job.
With reference to his seminal production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, among others, Brook explores in detail his craft and process, considering how to make Shakespeare modern without modernising. He redefines the notion of a director, rejects the notion of a concept, and refuses to be remembered for any one production.
