Afterlife

Michael Frayn

Michael Frayn’s Afterlife examines the life and career of Austrian impresario Max Reinhardt, who is considered one of the most prominent theatre directors of the early 20th century.

Reinhardt’s production of Everyman, a morality play where God sends Death to bring him a representative of mankind, is performed every year at the Salzburg festival until Hitler invades Austria in 1938, forcing Reinhardt to flee to America in exile. Frayn’s reimagining of Reinhardt’s life during this time draws parallels with Everyman, until Death finally comes for Reinhardt himself.
