Things I Know To Be True

Andrew Bovell
Lyric Hammersmith

“You need both in life. You need your parents to teach you the things that make you generous. You need all those great moments to know what happiness is like, how to be supportive of other people. And then, when they’re not perfect – which they’re not – you learn how to be independent and strong and all those things. You learn courage. And I think you need both.”

Kirsty explores the symbiotic responsibility of opening the play to an audience in soliloquy, inviting them as friends on a shared journey, whilst coming to terms with and conveying the emotional singularity of her own story. Kirsty describes Rosie as strong, trusting, positive and surprisingly stubborn, but examines how the character’s inability to speak for herself can ultimately result in letting others down, as she realises the limitations of the things she knows to be true.
