We are thrilled to announce that the Donmar Warehouse’s modern interpretation of Macbeth, starring David Tennant (Doctor Who, Broadchurch) and Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife, Criminal Record), is now available to watch on Digital Theatre+ as an exclusive educational license.

Sold-Out Run at London's Donmar Warehouse

Directed by Max Webster (Life of Pi, Henry V), Macbeth ran at London’s Donmar Warehouse from December 2023 to February 2024, and was captured live in 2024.

The production saw three Olivier nominations (including Best Revival) and a Best Shakespearean Performance win for David Tennant at the 2024 Critics’ Circle Awards.

Both David Tennant and Cush Jumbo were praised for their ‘electrifying’ performances, with Theatre Weekly writing:

‘As the titular Macbeth, [Tennant] holds the audience spellbound throughout, while Cush Jumbo’s Lady Macbeth is remarkably compelling, particularly [...] as guilt-driven madness descends.’

This modern production was also praised for its innovative use of binaural technology, which helped to place the audience inside the minds of Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. As sound designer Gareth Fry explained, ‘even though you know it’s an illusion, it still feels real to you.’

No. 1 at the UK Box Office

Macbeth was filmed live at the Donmar Warehouse in 2024, and was released in cinemas worldwide earlier this year by Event Cinema distributor Trafalgar Releasing.

‘This cinematic rendering [is] more than just a recording’, Everything Theatre wrote, ‘it’s a thoroughly satisfying theatrical event in itself’. What’sOnStage similarly praised capture director Tim Van Someren for leaning into ‘the flexibility the screen format provides’:

‘Tennant washing his blood-stained hands in ethereal slow motion, while brooding close-ups give an immediacy unavailable to a live audience. The occasional crane shot, sometimes fluttering overhead, provides a swooping sense of foreboding.’
