Top 5 2023 resources for you and your students (and they're free!)
As 2023 comes to a close, let’s take a look back at the impressive blogs and webinars that had fellow educators excited this year! With big names on big topics, it’s hard not to see the value in these picks, and if you (somehow) missed them, it’s not too late to catch up on the top 5 of 2023!
1. In Conversation with Richard Schechner and Eugenio Barba
Speaking of big names, they don't get much bigger than this! We were thrilled to host an extraordinary webinar with two eminent figures in the world of theatre and performance - professor and practitioner Richard Schechner and the Artistic Director of Odin Teatret, Eugenio Barba. In this exclusive event, we learned about the fascinating journeys of these theatrical visionaries, explored their enduring influence on theatre and performance studies, and the pivotal moments that have shaped their perspectives and practices. And, if you missed it, you can still catch up here!
2. How to rehearse Greek Tragedy with Carey Perloff
Brought to you by the amazing director, playwright, producer, and author, Carey Perloff, this insightful blog provides context as you go behind the scenes with Carey Perloff, alongside actors Nike Imoru, Jason Butler Harner, and Mike Ryan as they rehearse Sophocles’ Oedipus and explore it’s themes, context, and contemporary playing of ancient Greek tragedy.
3. The Evolution of Chicano Theatre
We were so excited to host an insightful discussion between two giants of American theatre and the Chicano Movement, Edward James Olmos and Luis Valdez, alongside UCSC Scholar Michale M. Chemers. They explored how Chicano Theatre has evolved in the past half-century, with Olmos and Valdez sharing their own personal insights and reflections, and looking to the future of the movement. As one attendee described, in this webinar you can really ‘feel the weight of history in the moments that are being discussed’.
4. Identity and Inclusion in Actor Training
Our final webinar of the year was certainly an inspiring one! Brought to you by pioneers (and professors) Sharrell D. Luckett and Kashi Johnson, this discussion delved into the critical intersection of identity and inclusion in actor training. This is a must-see (which means you can still watch it now) and explores and celebrates the diverse voices and experiences that contribute to the world of theatre.
5. Devising Theatre: The Frantic Assembly Approach
When it comes to devising theatre, it’s hard to find a more renowned approach than that of Frantic Assembly. We recently hosted an enlightening conversation between Frantic Assembly’s Artistic Director Scott Graham and highly acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Abi Morgan OBE, who shared their experiences of using physicality in their work and discussed the challenges and rewards of this creative approach.
Well, what a year it’s been! And if you are interested in hearing more exclusive insights from giants of theatre, then why not book a 5-minute tour of Digital Theatre+ to see everything on offer that will inspire you and your students?
